Hello, friends!

Something that’s been arising lately and that seems to be a common theme in class is “how can I be calm in these difficult times”. As we continue to navigate the ebb and flow of life, there are times when we find ourselves amidst upheaval—whether it's in our personal lives, in the world around us, or within ourselves. In these moments, it can feel challenging to maintain our inner peace. However, yoga offers us a powerful tool to help us remain grounded, calm, and centered, no matter the circumstances. Here are some tips that work for me:

  1. Breathe Through It: The breath is our anchor in moments of chaos. Whenever you feel overwhelmed, return to your breath. Deep, slow breaths can calm the nervous system and bring clarity to your mind. Try this simple technique: inhale for a count of 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, and hold for 4. Repeat for a few minutes and feel the shift in your energy.

  2. Ground Yourself: In times of instability, rooting yourself in the present moment can create a sense of calm. Whether you're on your yoga mat or in your daily life, take a few moments to feel the ground beneath you. Visualize your roots growing deep into the earth, supporting you as you face life’s challenges.

  3. Practice Compassion: It’s easy to become hard on ourselves when things aren’t going as planned, but yoga teaches us to be compassionate—not only toward others but toward ourselves. Show yourself kindness during stressful times, and allow space for growth and healing.

  4. Seek Enjoyment: Spending time with family, friends or community doing what you love and/or trying something new can bring about such a sense of calm and peace. Pop into a class, a new event, try a new sport, take a walk, play a game - Smile, Laugh, Enjoy.
